Kuakata, Bangladesh

Kuakata is a wonderful place for tourists in Bangladesh. It is located in Potuakhali district. Sunset and sunrise is found from the wide sea beach of Kuakata. From Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh it is about 320kms south, and about 70kms from the district headquarters. Total beach is 6kms wide and 30kms long.

The name Kuakata came from “kua” means well. Rakhain settlers dug it for collecting drinking water. They landed on Kuakata seaside from Arakan (Mayanmar) in 18th century by the Mughals. After some days it has become the tradition of digging “kua” among the nearest Rakhain tribes for drinking water.

In Bangladesh, it is known as “Sagorkonna” means the daughter of the sea. The extended bit of dark, patterned sand stretches for about 30 km. The long and wide beach at Kuakata has a archetypal ordinary scenery. This sandy beach has moderate slopes into the Bay of Bengal. Kuakata is also a shelter for drifting winter birds.

An evergreen mangrove forest and fragment of the original Kuakata called Gongamati Reserved Forest is situated on the eastern end of the beach. The Rakhains established here in 1784, when Kuakata was a part of Sundarbans but now you will have to go about 1 hour by speed boat to reach Sundarbans. You can arrive at Gongamoti by bike or on foot while you can see a lot of fishing boat trawling the seaside. You can achieve the experience of fishing by going to the boat if you able to manage the fishermen.

Hindu and Buddhist communities consider Kuakata as the place of pilgrimage. At the celebration of 'Rush Purnima' and 'Maghi Purnima' numerous disciples disembark here. The pilgrims take holy bath at the bay and participate in the traditional fairs on these two occasions. You can also visit the Buddhist temple. It is 100 years old, here the statue of Goutama Buddha and 200 years old wells are located.

Another important place is fisherman village where you can earn the practical knowledge about the lifestyle of fisherman. It is impossible from anywhere else. Here you can purchase fresh hilsha fish from coming fishermen from the sea. You will also get the cooked hilsha fish from nearest restaurant that is ready to eat.

The government and the local businessmen have developed the beach as though the visitors can visit this wonderful place with pleasure. At the present time the local people are most helpful to the travelers. The communication way has developed extensively. The decree and organize circumstances in the unfasten beach, has enhanced notably due to set up a police station in 2007.
